First Exhibition

A group of talented local artists is putting on an exhibition of their work at St Andrew’s Church, Benton, on Saturday 5th June 2010

The artists meet up at Longbenton Community College with their teacher and mentor, Michael Carr.

Michael is a professional artist and teacher who lives and works in Newcastle. His first success as an artist came at the age of 11 while attending Somervyl Junior School, Longbenton, when he won 1st Prize in a national competition run by Brooke Bond.

He left school at 16 and went to work as a junior artist at Design Group, South Gosforth. He worked as a graphic artist for 29 years at various studios and agencies. He began teaching twelve and a half years ago and now holds 13 classes a week, at schools and libraries, teaching a ranges of subjects including watercolours, pen and wash, pastels, drawing and portraiture. He presently runs 4 classes at Longbenton Community College.

Other artists in the group exhibiting their work at St Andrew’s are

  • Renée Anderson, who began painting only about four years ago. She says ‘I’d always wanted to paint but never had the time, so when I retired, I started going the class. I’ve tried other media, but I really like water colour the best. I absolutely love painting. I have a husband, Peter and two daughters and two grandchildren.’ It was through Renée that the exhibition came about, after her talent was ‘discovered’ by two friends, Eileen and Sheila, who are members of St Andrew’s church and encouraged Renée to exhibit her work there.
  • Pat Middlemiss who says ‘I was born in Newcastle, went to Kings College and Newcastle College of Art, moved to London in the 60’s with my husband Peter, who has since died. We loved the hippy arty years, but then I changed career to work in caring for the mentally ill. I lived in Linthorp, near Middlesbrough, but after an injury at work I moved back to Newcastle. I have three grown-up children, grandsons, a God-daughter and a very large old dog. I enjoy writing and have had lots of poems and stories published. But I love painting and drawing, even if I still can’t lay a flat wash!’
  • Tony Charlton
  • Arnold Ward, who, as well as painting, produces beautiful work in carved and turned wood – maybe there’s a future exhibition there!
  • Darren Dypevåg
